We are not big fans of Valentine’s Day, but we do have some love for Home Chef. Agree with us or not, but our perspective is that Valentine’s Day is just another commercialized holiday. One that drives men to feel guilty about how much they do or don’t do/spend on their significant other. Or one that makes single people feel even lonelier than they tend to feel already. Isn’t is much more meaningful for someone to do something for you “just because”??? Maybe even on a day when you need to feel the love even more than you do on February 14th? We think so.
We also are not fans of big crowds of people, so the thought of going out to dinner on a night when millions of people will be trying to crowd restaurants and other venues does not appeal to us at all. This year, we happened to have received a box from Home Chef, and we had a delicious recipe that sounded like an ideal meal at home for a “non-celebratory” holiday – Roasted Garlic Butter Steak! Sounds amazing, right?
A Recipe to Love
Well, we thought so when we ordered it, so we were anxious to try it! It came accompanied with ingredients to make cheddar fingerling potatoes and sauteed broccolini with shallots. So yummy!
I unbagged the supplemental ingredients and began to review the recipe. Don’t these look lovely? Home Chef thinks of everything….even down to pats of butter to go into the recipe!
I looked at the back of the card to see what steps might need to be completed first, then made a game plan for the food prep.
Prepping the Ingredients
I began to follow the instructions and prep each of the ingredients. My attempt at a foil packet for roasting the garlic was probably less than professional, but it got the job done! Here are some photos from the prep of step 1 on the card above:
Once the potatoes and garlic were headed into the oven for the first portion of the cooking, I could then turn my attention to the next phase of the prep – the broccolini and shallots.
Getting to the "meat" of the meal...
While I prepped the veggies, James had begun to prep the meat, as he was going to finish the cooking of the meal. All of the meats we get from Home Chef are top quality, and these beautiful 6 oz sirloins were no exception! Here they are being seared in our cast iron pan:
Once the searing was complete, he placed the steaks on the pan in place of the roasted garlic that was cooked and ready to be removed. It was also time to flip the potatoes and add the cheese to get them ready to finish cooking.
Before they went back into the oven…
…and the heavenly deliciousness that came back out!
While the steak and potatoes were finishing in the oven, he cooked the broccolini and shallots (photo below) and made the garlic butter (no photo).
The Plating of the Meal
Doesn’t this look like something you would find in a 5-star restaurant? Only we spent $9.95 per plate and didn’t have to get reservations or fight crowds!
The steak was cooked to somewhere between medium and medium well, so the meat still had lots of flavor! The crusty cheese and creamy potatoes just melted in your mouth, and the broccolini had a nice flavor and crunch! This was a great, well-balanced meal between protein, carbs, and green veggies, and it was perfect for our quiet evening at home!
